Rafting trips near: Durango

Durango is the center for tourism in southwestern Colorado. Founded in 1880 by the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad as a hub for the San Juan mountains mining district. Durango takes it's name from the town of Durango, Mexico and the Basque word urango" meaning "water town". An obvious choice for a community with a beautiful river, the Animas, flowing right through town. Durango is still anchored by the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad which transports tourists on a daily basis up the Animas River valley through the San Juan mountains to the old mining town of Silverton. Visitors traveling in the Four Corners region enjoy the close proximity to Mesa Verde National Park, the San Juan mountains, Utah and northern New Mexico. A robust downtown, listed as a Nationally Registered Historic District, hosts visitors with great shops, restaurants and hotels. Outdoor activities are available year-round in the Durango area. Whitewater rafting and kayaking on the Animas River are popular right in town. More adventurous white water paddlers can challenge the upper Animas River between Silverton and Durango or the Piedra River just outside of Durango.
