Rafting trips near: Silverton

Silverton is another one of Colorado's historic mining towns that now relies on tourism for its ecomonic base. Isolated high in the San Juan mountains at 9318 feet, Silverton has endured long, cold, snowy winters that hampered mining and timber operations. Today, the winters are quiet while the summers boom with tourist riding the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad into their town. Mining boomed in the late 1800's after the Brunot Treaty was signed in 1874 with the Utes. Miners from across the country and even China came to work in the difficult location susceptible to avalanches. Victorian buildings housing shops and restaurants await the tourist arriving by rail or by car over Red Mountain Pass. Whitewater rafters and kayakers can challenge the the Class IV-V rapids of the Upper Animas River right below Silverton.
