Rafting trips near: Ouray

Ouray sits at the base of one of Colorado's most treacherous mountain passes, Red Mountain Pass. This gateway town to the rugged San Juan mountains was a favorite camp for its namesake, Chief Ouray of the Tabequache Ute tribe. Reluctantly, Ouray relinquished this territory when settlers in the late 1800's descended upon the mountains in search of precious metals. Ouray is famous for the "sacred miracle waters" of the local hot springs favored by the Utes. Known as the "Switzerland of America" due to its rugged mountain spires, Ouray is an ice climbers' haven. The annual Ice Climbing Festival attracts world-class climbers. Vacationers in Ouray are wihin a few hours drive of several whitewater rafting and fly fishing rivers. Try the Taylor, Gunnison, San Miguel or Dolores Rivers while staying in Ouray.
