Rafting trips near: Canon City

Train ride through Royal Gorge canyons

Canon City is the gateway to the Royal Gorge region, southern Colorado's most popular tourist area. The Royal Gorge was a formidable obstacle to early explorers. Lt. Zebulon Pike, whose name adorns Pike's Peak, was turned back here trying to explore points west. Eventually a railroad was built to serve the silver mines around Leadville. The Royal Gorge Railroad War between the Sante Fe and the Denver-Rio Grande lines ended in a court battle won by the Denver-Rio Grande. Now a popular tourist train allows passengers spectacular views in the Royal Gorge. The Royal Gorge Bridge, built in 1929, towers 1053' over the rushing whitewater of the Arkansas River and is a popular tourist attraction. Visitors to Canon City have easy access to the whitewater rafting and excellent fly fishing in the Bighorn Sheep Canyon and Royal Gorge regions.
