Crested Butte is known locally as the "Last Great Colorado Ski Town". Locals have pride in a community committed to maintaining Victorian charm in a laid-back atmosphere that welcomes visitors. This National Historic District with a history steeped deeply in the late 1800's mining boom, has transformed nicely into a unique tourist destination. Right away, visitors to the "Butte" will notice the contagious emphasis on outdoor activities. Mountain bikers have long dominated the scene here. Crested Butte is the home of the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame and lays claim to starting the popular riding style. The Wildflower Festival in July anchors the many festivals that are popular in this mountain town.
