Rafting trips near: Black Canyon of Gunnison

Black Canyon National Park was established in 1999 to protect Colorado's most spectacular river canyon. The Gunnison River has cut through the Proterozoic crystalline rock in dramatic fashion where the canyon walls rise more than 2,000 feet above the river. Pegmatite extrusions add white criss-cross dikes through the black rock to create one of the most impressive displays of geological history in America. Difficult access kept early explorers, miners and railroad builders at bay. The natural beauty of the canyon along the river remains pristine for the hardy hiker. The Gunnison Gorge immediately adjacent is also protected as a National Conservation Area and provides easier, but still challenging access to a wilderness river gorge. Whitewater rafting and exceptional Gold Medal fly fishing are popular ways to experience the Gunnison River below the national park.
